Houston is one of the largest ocean gateways in the United States and a major air cargo hub. Eilan Trade Solutions clears ocean freight at the Port of Houston and air freight at Houston Intercontinental (IAH), and moves the freight onward, including south to Mexico. Clearing shipments since 1994.
Where this fits. Our main operation is the Laredo and Nuevo Laredo corridor. Houston matters to us because so much ocean freight lands here and then heads for a plant in Mexico: we clear it at the port and take it south through the crossing we run every day. See Laredo and Nuevo Laredo.
What moves through Houston
Houston handles a high share of resins and plastics, chemicals, oilfield and energy equipment, project cargo, steel and pipe, and containerised consumer goods. A great deal of it does not stop in Texas: material lands in Houston and continues to plants in Mexico, which is where an ocean clearance turns into a cross-border move.
What ocean and air freight need here
- Entry filing against the bill of lading or air waybill, with classification and duty treatment
- Other-agency requirements, including EPA, DOT, FDA and USDA where the commodity calls for them
- Hazardous materials, which are common in chemical and energy freight, handled with the documentation and placarding they require
- In-bond movements when the goods clear somewhere other than Houston
- Transload, warehousing and onward transportation, including to the Mexican border and beyond
Where the handoffs usually go wrong
Ocean freight bound for Mexico normally passes through several companies: a broker at the port, a trucker to the border, a second broker on the Mexican side. Each handoff is a place where a classification is restated, a document is retyped and a day is lost. We clear at Houston and at the Mexican crossings and seaports, so the same file follows the container from the vessel to the plant.
Frequently asked questions
Do you clear ocean containers at Houston?
Yes. Houston is one of our U.S. seaports, along with Long Beach and Los Angeles, New York and New Jersey, and Savannah. We also clear air freight at IAH.
Can you move the container on to Mexico after clearance?
Yes. That is the point of using one team: we clear the import at Houston, arrange the transportation, and handle the Mexican side at the crossing, rather than handing the shipment to a chain of companies.
Do you handle hazardous cargo at Houston?
Yes. Send the safety data sheet with the product details and we will confirm the classification, the documentation and what the movement requires before the freight arrives.
