Before import, the product needs authorization from the health authority (COFEPRIS), and customs checks that the pedimento, the tariff classification and the permits match. This guide covers what to review before the first shipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Sanitary registration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Medical devices are classified by risk (class I, II or III). Requirements and approval times increase with the class.<\/li>\n<li>The sanitary registration is held by a company established in Mexico (manufacturer, distributor or representative).<\/li>\n<li>Without a valid sanitary registration, the product cannot be sold in Mexico.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Sanitary import permit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many devices also need a COFEPRIS sanitary import permit.<\/li>\n<li>Documents usually requested: sanitary registration, certificate or letter of free sale from the country of origin, the manufacturer&#8217;s good manufacturing practices certificate, technical data sheet and invoice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Applicable standards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NOM-241-SSA1:<\/strong> good manufacturing practices for medical devices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NOM-137-SSA1:<\/strong> medical device labeling, in Spanish.<\/li>\n<li>Also check whether your <a href=\"\/en\/fraccion-arancelaria\/\">tariff classification<\/a> carries other <a href=\"\/en\/normas-nom-importacion\/\">NOM standards or regulations<\/a> in the NOM Annex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. At customs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The pedimento must declare the right tariff classification and the sanitary permit data.<\/li>\n<li>Description, model and part number must match the sanitary registration and the label.<\/li>\n<li>Inconsistencies hold the goods and can force relabeling or return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manufacturing in Mexico for export<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many plants in Mexico make medical devices under <a href=\"\/en\/logistica-immex\/\">IMMEX<\/a> for export to the United States, where FDA has its own establishment registration and device listing requirements. Also check whether your tariff classification carries other <a href=\"\/en\/normas-nom-importacion\/\">NOM standards or regulations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does a medical device get held at customs?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost always because the data does not match. Description, model and part number must be the same on the pedimento, the sanitary registration and the label.
